If you are new to supplements the sheer number of different options you have can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. What to take? What does it do? Is it good for me? All questions people can find themselves asking while deciding which supplements they should take. In order to make your next trip to GNC a little less stressful, this post is gonna focus on and break down the ABC’s of BCAA’s.
What are BCAA’s?
Our bodies need 20 total amino acids. Of these, half are non-essential which means they are produced by our bodies. We get the other half that are essential from the food we eat and supplements we take. Branched-Chain Amino Acids, more commonly known as BCAA’s, are an essential class of amino acids and are the building blocks of protein. These amino acids make up 35% of your muscle mass and your body uses them to reduce muscle soreness, support muscle growth, and sustain muscle mass.
When our bodies produce BCAA’s from food, they first travel to our liver where they get broken down for fuel or muscle repair. The benefit of taking a BCAA supplement is that the supplements bypass the liver and go straight to your muscles. Because they take a bee-line straight to where they need to be, BCAA supplements are ideal for quicker muscle repair, fueling and muscle building. This also means that they can be taken during a workout to help with endurance.
Most supplements come with varying times for ideal consumption…. Must take in the morning on an empty stomach, must take with food, take between meals, before workouts, after workouts, while doing a handstand with your eyes closed…ok that last one might not be true but you get the idea! The great thing about BCAA’s is that there is no right or wrong time to take them. You can take them before a workout, after one or all throughout your day. There is no risk of taking too much because your body will only process and use what it needs and then it will dispose of the rest during your bathroom breaks. If you take your BCAA’s in powder form mixed with water they also taste great! The added flavor to your water will also help you meet the necessary ounces of water you should be drinking. It’s a win win!
